I don't own this boxed set, nor any Riders or Rohan miniatures, so I'm playing the campaign as Romans against Orcs. This scenario is the confrontation in which Théoden, in the book and movie, is slain by the Witch-King of Angmar. In my battle, Roman commander Gaius Theodinus is using Théoden's stats, and Mibyllorr is using the Witch-King of Angmar stats. I got Mibyllorr Darkfang as part of my Warhammer+ subscription a few years ago and have used her as the titular character in some [Deth Wizards](https://mixedsignals.ml/games/blog/blog_review-deth-wizards) games, but I don't get to use her as often as I'd like. I'm happy to get to put her on the table again. ## Story The Romans have pushed past the onslaught of the orc horde. Though they slaughtered many orcs, as they approach the great city of Rome that they've sworn to protect, they find its outer streets in disarray. Some great terror has visited this place, and from the oppressive and unnatural quiet, the legionaries know that it lingers still. Theodinus rides forward through the streets, into a broken temple. Just as he knew he would, he finds a sorcerer defiling the gods with her very presence. Just as the sorcerer begins to laugh softly under her breath, the roar of orcs is heard. A new horde rushes into the city, making for the city centre, but Theodinus' riders are ready to hold them back. As for Theodinus, his priority is clear: Kill the Witch-Queen of Darkfang! Battlefield ## Special rules The Romans always count as Charging. 3 orcs have spears, 3 have spears and shields, and the remaining 6 have swords. Mibyllor Darkfang has no Fell Beast, so I've add the Fell Beast's attacks (2) to her Attack value. Unlike an actual Fell Beast, Mibyllor's these extra attacks can't be lost, but also unlike an actual Fell Beast she's not benefiting from an extra Wound count, so I think that balances it out. My Roman cavalry consists of 5 Romans (including Theodinus) with swords and 4 mercenaries with spears and 1 mercenary with a sword. ## Round 1 Mibyllor Darkfang and her orc horde roll high for initiative. She's in the ruined temple at the centre of the field, and Theodinus has just ridden up to her, sword drawn. She acts fast, conjuring her fell magic even as he approaches. Testing her opponent's strength, she casts Black Dart, and rolls a 5 for her casting roll. Theodinus spends 1 Will point to resist, and fails with a 4. Black Dart is Strength 9 and Theondinus's Defence is 7, so she only needs a 3 to wound. She rolls 6 on her damage roll, so that's 1 Wound out of 2. Knowing that there's a prophecy that man may kill her, Mibyllor Darkfang is not very troubled by this confrontation. The orcs advance, but there's a big temple in the way, so some go north and most go south. The Romans ride forward, the mercenaries quietly avoiding the sorceress and heading for the orcs. As for Theodinus's countrymen, 2 rush to support him, and 2 head north, anticipating similar orc tactics as in the previous battles. No orcs sneaking around from the rear this time. Theodinus charges forward into melee with Mibyllor. He's got 2 Attacks to her 1, and to make matters worse for her, Mibyllor rolls a 1. Theodinus has gotten 2 Hits in, but his Strength is a paltry 4 against her 8 Defence. He rolls a 1 and 2 to wound, which no amount of Might can improve (well, that's not strictly true, but he's only got 3 Might.) No damage this round, and that could be very bad for Theodinus. * Mibyllor: 2 Might, 11 Will, 2 Fate * Theodinus: 3 Might, 2 Will, 1 Fate ## Round 2 Evil rolls high for initiative again. Mibyllor rolls a 4 for casting, but spends 1 Might point to boost it to 5. That brings her down to just 1 Might remaining. Theodinus resists with just a 4, and spends 1 Might to boost it to 5, causing the spell to fail. That feels like a big deal, especially with 2 Romans closing in. The orcs advance, with some of them closing in on the temple to support Mibyllor. They can't quite close the distance, and Theodinus and 2 Romans charge Mibyllor. I forgot during the previous round to grant Mibyllor the attacks of a Fell Beast, so this time she has 3 attacks, but that's still up against 4 incoming attacks. Theodinus spends 1 Might to gain Heroic Strength, but at the same time Mibyllor spends her last Might point to issue a Heroic Challenge. As a result, Theodinus's Romans back away, knowing that they need to deal with approaching orcs and that honour demands Theodinus face Mibyllor alone. Theodinus only rolls a 1 for Heroic Strength, bringing his total Strength to 5. That means he only needs a 5+ to wound, and because he has a 1 Might remaining it really means he only needs a 4+. They roll, and each score a hit. Mibyllor rolls 1 to damage, but Theodinus rolls a 4. He spends 1 Might to bring that to 5 and scores 1 Wound. Mibyllor only has 1 Wound, so she would be vanquished but for Fate (bringing her down to 1 Fate point.) The Mercenaries charge a group of orcs. One Mercenary loses his steed, but 2 orcs are killed. * Mibyllor: 0 Might, 10 Will, 1 Fate * Theodinus: 0 Might, 1 Will, 1 Fate ## Round 3 I'm not sure how much more fight Theodinus has left in him, with his 0 Might, but Good does roll high for initiative this round. The advantage to having initiative on this particular round is that Theodinus' army can assert control over the battlefield. They charge at the orcs, preventing any of them from moving to help Mibyllor. I forgot to have Theodinus' guards take Courage tests in the previous round when charging Mibyllor but it didn't matter because she issued a Heroic Challenge that drove them back anyway. This time, they do take a Courage test to charge her, and they both pass with a 10 and 11. Mibyllor spends 1 Will to cast Compel on the 2 guards, but the casting fails when she gets a 2 for a 4+ casting roll. Swords swing, and they all hit Mybillor but with Strength scores no higher than 4 they deal no damage. Staff raised against them, Mibyllor growls, "No man can kill me!" The Romans and orcs around the temple battle it out. It's kind of unspectacular for everyone involved, but the Romans manage to kill 2 orcs, mostly thanks to the double damage rolls you get against a trapped model, and the orcs were dumb enough to pour into the relatively cramped space of temple ruins. Er, I mean, the gods favour Rome! * Mibyllor: 0 Might, 9 Will, 1 Fate * Theodinus: 0 Might, 1 Will, 1 Fate ## Round 4 Good rolls high for initiative again. But Mibyllor has learned much of her enemies. The Romans charge her again, but she's not too concerned. She can take a wound, at least. But...she fails her roll to cast Black Dart on Theodinus. Things get worse for her, because I suddenly realise I cheated the Romans out of an advantage. They're mounted, so they should be rolling twice their usual number of attacks. That's 8 dice against her 3. As you might expect with those odds, Theodinus finally manages to deal 1 Wound. Well, he _would have_ dealt a wound if it weren't for Mybillor's last remaining Fate point. "No man can kill me!" she says again, although Theodinus thinks he hears doubt in her voice now. The orcs and Romans continue to fight, with another Roman losing his mount and falling prone, and a few more orcs are removed. * Mibyllor: 0 Might, 8 Will, 0 Fate * Theodinus: 0 Might, 1 Will, 1 Fate ## Round 5 Evil has initiative, so Mibyllor channels her Black Dart spell. She manages to get the encantation right this time, which is bad for Theodinus because the Channeled version of Black Dart deals d3 wounds. Lucky for him, Mibyllor rolls a 1 on her d3, so he spends 1 Fate point to cancel it. "Next time," she sneers, and she's probably not wrong. Theodinus and his 2 Romans charge at her again, and again deal no damage. I feel like Theodinus' days are numbered. One more successful Black Dart, and he's gone for good. The Romans and orcs continue to fight, and some more orcs are removed. More importantly, one of the orcs manages to charge on of Theodinus' guards. Luckily the guard's armour holds up and no damage is done. ## Round 6 Theodinus rolls high for initiative, but it may not matter because Mibyllor is already casting a spell. He and his guards charge her, and then she channels Black Dart. She rolls a 2 for a 5+ so the spell fails. The Romans slash and stab, and Theodinus manages to get a hit in. He rolls a 6, which is the only damage roll that can actually wound her and, with no Fate points left, Mibyllor is dead. And I guess Theodinus takes his fake beard off to reveal he was Eowyn all along? Probably not enough setup for that. The orcs, seeing their leader impossibly slain, run back to the volcanic wasteland whence they came. * Mibyllor: 0 Might, 6 Will, 0 Fate * Theodinus: 0 Might, 1 Will, 0 Fate ## Good scenario Today I learned that Theodin doesn't have enough Might to boost his stats enough to do damage against the Witch-King of Angmar. The back-and-forth felt good at first, as each of the opponents wore down the other's resources, but they did struggle a little at the end. I probably should have had Mibyllor abandon that fight and focus on killing random Romans and mercenaries, but in the moment I was pretty invested in the showdown. There was a lot of luck involved in the final blows. There's another reality, not too for from our own, where Mibyllor wins that fight, because Theodinus was just not doing the kind of damage required to take her down. It was really all in the d3 roll. Had Mibyllor rolled 2 or 3 for damage, Theodinus would be dead and the Romans would have run. ## Next scenario Even as the orcs retreat, the spirits of those the orcs slaughtered along their warpath begin to rise. The next and final scenario is [March of the Dead](https://mixedsignals.ml/games/blog/game_battle-of-pelennorium-fields-3).
